Zimmerman's makes the argument about the inverse relationship between the family and the state this relationship states that when the family is Strong the state is weak when the state is strong the family is weak.
This inverse relationship breaks down the family into 3 types
1.The trustee family- oldest member of the family controls what the family does has the power over the clan how they are to use resources and who gets what(family strong and state weak)
2.Domestic family - balance between the trustee and atomistic family
3.Atomistic family - little or no connection with extended family go outside the family unit to get help with issues family members are having (family weak state strong
I personally believe that the domestic family is the best balance between family and the state as you have your family there to support one another and work problems out but when issues get out of hand or your family is unable to deal with the situation the state should be able to help a family out so they can continue to live their lives in a normal fashion and not hit rock bottom.
